By The House of Representatives has signaled a renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s livestock industry, unveiling six key bills aimed at improving food security and protecting farmers’ livelihoods.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, on Thursday reaffirmed the commitment of the 10th House to strengthening livestock development across the country.
Tajudeen, represented at the event by the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka, made the remarks while declaring open a public hearing on six bills being considered by the House Committee on Livestock Development in Abuja.
Describing livestock as a cornerstone of food security, the Speaker said,
“The House remains committed to advancing policies that drive our economy. Livestock is fundamental to guaranteeing food security.”
He urged stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to the legislative process, emphasizing the House’s commitment to improving national food security.
Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Livestock Development, Hon. Tasir Raji, explained that the public hearing is an essential part of the legislative process. He highlighted the importance of the six bills as tools to advance livestock development in Nigeria.
“The committee is ready to collect and collate all information required to establish a thriving livestock sector in line with the vision of President Tinubu,” Raji said.
Also addressing the hearing, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr. Chinyere Akujobi, represented by the Director of Projects Coordination, emphasized the Ministry’s focus on improving food security and supporting farmers affected by avian influenza.
“The Ministry assures the House that once funds are made available, verified farmers affected by outbreaks will be duly compensated. We deeply appreciate the continued support of the National Assembly in advancing livestock development and protecting the livelihoods of Nigerian farmers,” Akujobi said.
She also pledged the Ministry’s commitment to a fair, efficient, and sustainable compensation framework in collaboration with the House of Representatives.
