2026 Budget: FG Allocates Trillions to Defence, Finance, Security, Agriculture

 

The Federal Government has outlined detailed allocations to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, with major spending directed at defence, security, finance, agriculture and electoral administration.

A breakdown of the budget shows that the Federal Ministry of Finance received the largest allocation at ₦16.78 trillion, reflecting its central role in debt servicing, treasury operations and fiscal management.

The Ministry of Defence followed with ₦3.15 trillion, underscoring government’s continued focus on national security, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was allocated ₦1.01 trillion, ahead of electoral and institutional activities.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security received ₦1.45 trillion, signaling increased attention to food production and food security, while the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs was allocated ₦1.33 trillion. The Ministry of Powergot ₦1.11 trillion, aimed at improving electricity generation and distribution.

Other notable allocations include ₦664.12 billion for the Office of the National Security Adviser, ₦696.42 billion for the Ministry of Interior, and ₦838.67 billion  for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The Presidency was allocated ₦355.1 billion, while the National Assembly received ₦344.85 billion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs got ₦344.24 billion, and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)was allocated ₦293.02 billion.

In the infrastructure and economic sectors, the Ministry of Transport received ₦431.8 billion, Aviation and Aerospace got ₦88.21 billion, Industry, Trade and Investment received ₦87.44 billion, and Communications and Digital Economy was allocated ₦84.56 billion.

Smaller but strategic agencies also received funding, including the Auditor-General for the Federation (₦15.88 billion), Public Complaints Commission(₦29.46 billion), Federal Civil Service Commission (₦2.6 billion), Code of Conduct Tribunal (₦2.37 billion), Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (₦2.78 billion), and the Police Service Commission(₦2.39 billion).

The Ministry of Labour and Employment was allocated ₦183.57 billion, Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs received ₦13.78 billion, while the Federal Ministry of Steel Development got ₦21.52 billion. The Ministry of Petroleum Resources received ₦71.6 billion.

The allocations form part of the Federal Government’s 2026 budget proposal, which is currently under legislative consideration at the National Assembly.
