Abia Set to Launch Modular Refinery by Q2 2025

The Abia State Government has announced that construction of its long-anticipated 10,000 barrels per day modular refinery will kick off in the second quarter of 2025.

This was revealed by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a media briefing on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu explained that the refinery, which will be situated within the Abia Industrial and Innovative Park (AIIP) in Owaza, Ukwa West LGA, received the federal government’s approval through HSI to build and operate the facility.

“The government is making steady progress,” he stated. “All affected landowners have been compensated, and site preparation, including bush clearing and earthworks, is already underway.”

The refinery is seen as a signature project of the current administration, designed to spur industrialization and energy production in the state.

Kanu also revealed that the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is conducting a study of the state’s solid mineral deposits to assess their potential for commercial exploitation. “Once results are in, we’ll determine the next steps and welcome private sector participation,” he said.
