Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has stepped down from her roles after admitting she underpaid stamp duty on a flat in Hove, East Sussex. She has also resigned as deputy leader of the Labour Party, prompting an ongoing government reshuffle.
Rayner, who represents Ashton-under-Lyne in Parliament, had earlier referred herself to the Prime Minister’s ethics adviser after acknowledging the shortfall on her £800,000 property. In her resignation letter, she accepted “full responsibility” for the error, saying she should have sought further tax advice before the purchase.

An ethics investigation concluded that Rayner breached the ministerial code and failed to act on legal advice that had cautioned her.
Labour leader Keir Starmer, in a letter to Rayner, expressed sadness at her departure, noting she would remain “a major figure” within the party.
Political analysts say the development is a significant personal setback for Rayner and carries serious implications for the Prime Minister.
