The Ekiti State government has announced plans to comprehensively review the law establishing the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to formally include Local Government Emergency Management Committees, particularly in tackling flood and fire disasters.
The move, according to the government, is aimed at strengthening disaster management structures and ensuring swift response to emergencies from the grassroots level up to the state. This, it said, will help minimize destruction of property and loss of lives.
Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, disclosed this on Thursday when she received the new Zonal Director of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Said Akinyode, in her office in Ado Ekiti.
Afuye, who reiterated Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s strong commitment to effective disaster management, explained that the planned law review reflects the administration’s desire to enhance public safety across all communities while aligning with both national and global standards for disaster risk reduction.
