Senator Said Alkali, brings together a wide range of stakeholders including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Other members include representatives of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Driving School Association of Nigeria (DSAN), Female Drivers Association (FDA), Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), and the Institute of Driving Inspectors of Nigeria (IDIN).
Senator Alkali, while inaugurating the committee, said the spate of deadly crashes was unacceptable and demanded urgent action. He gave the committee one week to present a detailed report.
“This is a national emergency,” the minister said. “We’ve lost far too many lives and properties to these incidents. The safety of Nigerians on the road is non-negotiable and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s development priorities.”
He added that beyond investigating accident trends, the committee will also design strategies for improving driver training, instituting mandatory certification programmes, and boosting safety compliance across the country’s transport sector.
