Islamic Scholars Call for Action Against GBV

Islamic scholars in northern Nigeria have urged governments and the Muslim community to take stronger action in protecting women and children from gender-based violence (GBV). The Muslim Opinion Leaders (MOLs), under the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) and supported by the Ford Foundation, emphasized that Islam strictly forbids all forms of violence and upholds the dignity of women.

In a statement signed by Associate Professor Taufiq Abubakar of Bayero University, Kano, the scholars reaffirmed that Islamic teachings provide clear guidelines on preventing GBV and ensuring justice for survivors. They referenced Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) final sermon, which stresses the importance of treating women with kindness and respect.

MOLs highlighted that Islam mandates care for wives, protection for mothers after childbirth, and support for widows and orphans. They condemned all forms of GBV—physical, emotional, psychological, economic, and social—stating that such acts go against Islamic principles.

The scholars called on governments and stakeholders to strengthen collaborations with security agencies, ensure justice for survivors, and establish clear reporting channels for GBV cases. They also urged individuals and philanthropists to support survivors, combat stigma, and promote education to reduce vulnerabilities.

Governments at all levels were encouraged to adopt best practices from countries like Malaysia and Egypt in providing post-divorce care and GBV response measures. MOLs stressed the need for more support for organizations handling GBV cases and ensuring proper assistance for survivors.

Marking International Women’s Day 2025, the scholars reaffirmed Islam’s stance on protecting women and children. They called on religious and community leaders to raise awareness, educate their congregations, and take concrete steps to prevent GBV, ensuring a safer society for all.
