The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has completed a major project to streamline the use of short codes in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. This effort began in April 2011 to create a unified system that would make short codes easier to use for both service providers and consumers.
In June 2017, the NCC brought in MOLCOM Multi Concepts Limited to help finalize the project. The main goal was to review all short codes currently in use and create a “National Short Code Plan” (NSCP) that would harmonize their use across all networks.
To achieve this, the consultants studied how short codes are used in other countries, reviewed recommendations from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and worked closely with stakeholders in Nigeria’s telecom sector.
They conducted surveys, held industry meetings, and organized a focus group discussion in Lagos on November 23, 2017, to gather feedback and refine the plan.
The project is now complete, and the NCC has delivered:
– A detailed plan for organizing short codes.
– A strategy for transitioning existing codes to the new system.
– An updated database of short code allocations.
– Recommendations for harmonizing common codes across all networks to make them more user-friendly.
One of the key benefits of this project is the simplification of short codes for common services like checking balances or subscribing to data plans. With the harmonized system, users will no longer need to remember different codes for the same services on different networks.
Additionally, the project opens up opportunities for new codes, freeing up 84% of 3-digit codes, 98% of 4-digit codes, and 99% of 5-digit codes for future use.
The NCC’s work on this project highlights its commitment to improving the telecommunications experience for Nigerians. Once implemented, the new short code system will make telecom services simpler and more convenient for everyone.
