In a major shakeup in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar has taken over as the new Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in Maiduguri, Borno State. He replaces Major General Waidi Shaibu, who handed over command during a formal ceremony at Maimalari Cantonment on Tuesday.
Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed the transition in a public statement. The event marked the official beginning of Abubakar’s tenure as the 15th leader of the counter-insurgency mission in the northeast.
Abubakar is no stranger to the region. He has held several top roles including Commander of Sector 3 OPHK, GOC of 7 Division, and Commander of Sector 1 OPHK—all within Maiduguri. Most recently, he served as Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies at the National Defence College in Abuja.
Outgoing Commander Shaibu, in his farewell remarks, praised the troops for their discipline and dedication throughout his time in command. He described his tenure as one of growth and difficult but fulfilling experiences across hostile terrains.
Shaibu urged the soldiers to stay committed and professional in their fight against insurgency. He acknowledged the bravery and sacrifice of the troops, many of whom have paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.
He also voiced strong confidence in Abubakar’s ability to lead, calling him a tested and trusted commander who knows the battlefield well. “Support him fully,” Shaibu said, “and continue the mission with courage.
