Reps Order NCC to Ban Pornographic Websites

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to compel internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to all pornographic websites in the country.

This decision followed a motion by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, who argued that Nigeria has not done enough to curb online obscenity. Tafoki stressed that as a religious nation, Nigeria upholds moral values that contradict nudity and explicit content.

He cited examples of countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have already enacted laws banning pornography. Additionally, he referenced expert warnings on the dangers of pornography, linking it to adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

“Experts in psychology and sociology worldwide have raised serious concerns about the psychological, sociological, and mental impacts of consuming pornographic material,” Tafoki stated.

The motion received unanimous support after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas put it to a voice vote. Lawmakers agreed that urgent action was needed to curb the spread of explicit content.

Following this, the House instructed the NCC to impose penalties on any ISP that fails to comply with the directive, reinforcing the government’s stance on internet regulation.
