SGF Urges Northern Leaders to Respect Zoning

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged northern political leaders to uphold the zoning principle for national unity.

Speaking in Bauchi at the 11th Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture and Awards, Akume, represented by his chief of staff Christopher Tarkaa, emphasized that zoning agreements ensure fair representation across all regions.

His remarks come amid speculation that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai are strategizing for the 2027 presidency. Some believe this move could disrupt political stability, as the South may seek an eight-year term before power shifts back to the North.

Akume stressed that zoning has played a vital role in maintaining Nigeria’s political balance, urging leaders to prioritize national cohesion over personal ambitions.

“The principle of zoning has been instrumental in maintaining Nigeria’s fragile balance,” he stated, calling on political actors to respect the unwritten power-sharing arrangement.

He reassured Nigerians that the federal government remains committed to social justice and equity, emphasizing that unity in diversity is the country’s greatest asset for national development.
