Tinubu Denies Blocking New Parties, Dismisses One-Party State Allegation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has debunked claims that he directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to halt the registration of new political parties in Nigeria.

Speaking during a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday to mark Democracy Day, the president clarified that his administration has never interfered with INEC’s constitutional responsibilities.

“I have never stopped the registration of any political party,” Tinubu stated firmly, addressing the speculation directly.

He also rejected accusations that his government is working toward turning Nigeria into a one-party state. While reaffirming the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s openness to new members, the president said it would be “political malpractice” for the ruling party to shut its doors to defectors.

Welcoming new APC members from Delta and Akwa Ibom States, Tinubu said, “You are all welcome to the progressives’ forum.”

The president, however, made it clear that he has no intention of assisting opposition parties in resolving their internal crises. “It is indeed a pleasure to watch your houses in disarray,” he added, drawing reactions from prethe floor.
