Water Resources Minister Seeks Catholic Church’s Support Against Open Defecation

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, has called on the Catholic Church to support Nigeria’s national campaign against open defecation.

During a courtesy visit to the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, the minister stressed the importance of faith-based organisations in promoting cleaner and healthier communities.

Prof. Utsev highlighted the Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet campaign, which was launched in 2019 and aims to end open defecation in Nigeria by 2030.

He noted that the campaign, backed by Executive Order 9, has achieved notable progress, with the number of open defecation-free local governments rising from 102 to 142 under the current administration. He also commended Jigawa State, which remains the only state entirely free of open defecation.
