CAN Mourns Pope Francis, Hails Him as “Champion of Mercy”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis at age 88, describing him as a global symbol of mercy, compassion, and unity.

In a heartfelt tribute issued Monday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh called the late Pontiff “a towering figure of faith” who inspired hope through his commitment to justice and interfaith harmony.

“Pope Francis was a champion of mercy whose leadership deeply impacted the global church and strengthened ties with Nigerian Christians,” Okoh said.

He lauded the Pope’s efforts in appointing Nigerian Bishops and Cardinals, his strong stance against poverty and corruption, and his influence through documents like Laudato Si and Amoris Laetitia.

“Though he never visited Nigeria, his outreach across Africa conveyed deep solidarity,” Okoh added.

CAN called for prayers for the peaceful repose of the Pope’s soul and for the Catholic Church as it navigates this period of transition.

“His legacy of humility and compassion will continue to inspire us in building a more united and righteous Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
