US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with European leaders including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss security guarantees and peace negotiations for Ukraine.
Trump confirmed that the US will provide security guarantees for Ukraine, while European nations would take on much of the responsibility. He said Russian President Vladimir Putin “agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine.” Von der Leyen welcomed the initiative, noting it resembled NATO Article Five security guarantees, which protect all member nations from attack.
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held high-level talks with European leaders, including Macron and Merz, on Ukraine security guarantees, potential territorial exchanges, and the future of peace negotiations amid ongoing conflict.
French President Macron emphasized Ukraine must maintain a credible army for the long term, while Trump suggested a ceasefire may not be necessary for peace negotiations. German Chancellor Merz, however, stressed the importance of stopping hostilities.
Trump also proposed a trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelenskyy, with the potential for a subsequent quadrilateral summit including European partners. Discussions may cover territorial exchanges in eastern Ukraine, specifically the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, though Zelenskyy has rejected any concessions.
