A cleaner in Maiduguri, Borno State, has been praised for her integrity after returning ₦4.8 million that was mistakenly deposited into her bank account.
The woman, Faiza Abdulkadir, who earns ₦30,000 a month working at a healthcare center, said she made the decision out of fear of God and the desire for peace of mind.
“The money was not mine, so I returned it. I wanted to avoid God’s punishment on the Day of Judgment and have peace in my heart,” Faiza told journalists in Maiduguri.
She explained that the process of refunding the money took three days at the bank, during which she felt restless. “I couldn’t even eat well until the day I finally transferred the money back to its owner,” she said in an interview with News Central.
Neighbors and bank officials described Faiza as a woman of discipline and integrity. “We were not surprised by her action,” a neighbor said. “She lives modestly with her five children and has always demonstrated good values.”
A bank staff member also commended her, noting that such honesty is rare. “Despite her circumstances, she chose to do the right thing. I once witnessed a similar case where a customer withdrew mistakenly transferred funds and never returned them, putting bank staff in serious trouble. Faiza’s action is exceptional.”
Her gesture has since drawn admiration from members of the public, who hailed her as an example of honesty in difficult times.
