Nasarawa residents tasks INEC on hitch-free voters registration

Electorates in Nasarawa State have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deploy additional personnel and functional machines to ensure a smooth process in the ongoing Continuous Voter Physical Registration exercise.

A visit by Radio Nigeria to some INEC offices across local government areas revealed that the exercise, which began on Monday, August 25, 2025, has been hampered by late arrival of officials, technical glitches, and malfunctioning machines.

Despite INEC’s earlier sensitisation campaigns involving traditional rulers, community leaders, faith-based groups, and the media, turnout has remained low in many registration centres.

At the INEC offices in Nasarawa Eggon, Doma, and Lafia Local Government Areas, only a few residents were seen queuing as early as 7:30 a.m. In Nasarawa Eggon, a visually impaired voter, Mr Auta Alaku, said he spent more than two hours without receiving assistance to correct errors on his voter card.

Another voter appealed for additional machines to fast-track the process. In Doma, Some elderly residents, Baba Omaku and Mr Haruna Oga expressed frustration that despite arriving hours before the scheduled time, registration had not commenced due to persistent machine breakdown.

Similarly, in Lafia, Moses Aku and Mallam Hassan Rabiu urged INEC to restore public confidence in the exercise, noting that they expected improved operations following lessons from previous registration exercises.

Responding to the concerns, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Shehu Elwahab, appealed for calm and assured residents that all technical challenges were being addressed.

He also urged stakeholders to step up sensitization efforts to encourage wider participation. As the exercise enters its second day, voters across Nasarawa State are calling for urgent improvements to ensure a credible and inclusive process.
