The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of over $4.6 billion in health grants received by Nigeria from the Global Fund and USAID between 2021 and 2025.
The motion, moved by Hon. Philip Agbese, seeks to uncover how billions meant to combat HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria have been utilized, amid rising disease burdens.
Agbese noted that despite huge international support including $1.8 billion from the Global Fund, $2.8 billion from USAID, and over $6 billion in PEPFAR assistance Nigeria still ranks among the highest globally in HIV, TB, and malaria cases.
The lawmaker raised concern over the lack of effective oversight by the National Assembly and warned that if current trends continue, Nigeria may fail to meet the 2030 UN target to eliminate the three diseases.
The House therefore mandated its Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Control to investigate the grants’ utilization and directed the Minister of Health and Social Welfare to present detailed implementation plans and approvals for the funds.
