Court Gives Nnamdi Kanu Until November 5 to Defend Terrorism Charges or Forfeit Right

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, has ordered Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to present his defence in the ongoing terrorism trial on or before November 5, 2025, or lose the right to do so.

At Tuesday’s sitting, Kanu who chose to represent himself told the court that he had not filed a final written address as previously directed. Instead, he submitted a motion and a supporting affidavit.

The IPOB leader argued that there was no valid or lawful charge pending against him under Nigerian law, insisting that his continued trial and detention were illegal. He also demanded his immediate release, stating that he would not return to custody for a case he considered baseless.

However, the prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), challenged the validity of Kanu’s recent court filings, claiming they were not properly submitted. Awomolo urged the court to treat Kanu’s latest documents as his final written address, direct both parties to adopt their addresses, and set a date for judgment.

In his ruling, Justice Omotosho held that Kanu’s documents were properly filed and would be considered during judgment. The judge also emphasized that since Kanu is not a legal practitioner, he must be given time to consult a lawyer and obtain necessary legal support.

The case was subsequently adjourned to November 5, 2025, for the defendant to either present his defence or be deemed to have waived his right to do so.
