Rep. Kelechi Nwogu urges urgent action on Nigeria’s worsening security crisis

Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP–Rivers) has called on the House of Representatives to adopt stronger measures to address Nigeria’s escalating security challenges.

Nwogu, who represents the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency, made the appeal on Thursday during a special plenary session on national security in Abuja.

The lawmaker decried the increasing rate of killings across the country, noting that many deaths could be prevented if security issues received the necessary attention and funding.

He stressed that lawmakers must speak for victims of insecurity, push for justice, and work toward preventing further attacks nationwide.

“People are dying every day in this crazy world like flies. We read it in the news, we watch it on television, yet we don’t believe it—until a man in a long coat comes to our door with a gun. That is when we understand we could be the next victim,” he said.

Nwogu urged Nigerians to look beyond uniforms and ranks when security operatives are killed, describing each fallen officer as a father, husband, and breadwinner whose death devastates entire families.

“I plead that this House takes the issue of security seriously. When that general died, someone lost a father and a husband. Imagine what his children and loved ones went through, watching him murdered in broad daylight while serving this country,” he said.

He added that the National Assembly must take decisive action and defend the lives of citizens, noting that the security situation demands urgent legislative intervention.

“It is time to rise. It is time to speak for them and to speak for the people of Nigeria,” Nwogu said.
