Northern Governors Seek Six-Month Suspension of Mining Exploration, Back Establishment of State Police

The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to suspend all mining exploration activities in the region for six months to allow for a comprehensive audit in collaboration with state governments.

The Forum raised concerns that illegal mining has become a major driver of insecurity across Northern Nigeria.

The call was part of a communiqué issued after a joint meeting of the Northern Governors and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council held on Monday in Kaduna. The communiqué was read by the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

N1 Billion Monthly Regional Security Trust Fund Established

The governors announced the creation of a regional Security Trust Fund, which will be financed through a monthly contribution of N1 billion from each state and local government. The deduction will be made at source based on an agreed framework.

The communiqué emphasized unity and cooperation as crucial to addressing the region’s challenges:

“At this pivotal juncture in our history, we recognise that only through unity, peer review, and cooperation can we overcome the pressing challenges before us. Accordingly, we reaffirm our resolve to confront these challenges with firmness and clarity to fulfil our constitutional responsibility.”

Condolences to Victims of Recent Attacks

The Forum expressed deep sympathy to the governments and people of Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa, and Kano States following recent killings and abductions, including schoolchildren. Similar condolences were extended to communities affected by Boko Haram attacks in Borno and Yobe States.

The governors also commended President Tinubu for his efforts in ensuring the rescue of some abducted children and in responding to the broader security challenges facing the country. They praised the commitment and sacrifices of military personnel combating insurgency.

Support for Tinubu’s Security Measures and State Police

The Forum reaffirmed its support for all actions taken by the President to confront insurgents and bring an end to criminality in the region.

It also restated its full backing for the establishment of state police — a measure many believe will strengthen security at the grassroots.

“The Forum reaffirms its wholehearted support and commitment to the establishment of State Police. Accordingly, the Forum encourages National and State Assembly members in the region to expedite action for its actualisation,” the communiqué said.
