The House of Representatives was thrown into a rowdy session on Thursday after Hon. Philip Agbese alleged that his signature was forged on a list supporting Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere for Minority Leader.
A list of 61 opposition lawmakers had earlier circulated, showing signatures backing Ugochinyere, a member of the Action People’s Party (APP). Agbese’s name was also on the list.
Reports had also claimed that the lawmakers received $50,000 each before signing the document, but this has not been confirmed.
Raising a matter of personal privilege, Agbese told the House that he never signed any such document. He said his name was used without his permission and described it as a forgery.
He also denied receiving any money and said his integrity and reputation were being damaged.
“I never signed any document and I never received any amount of money,” he said, adding that he would submit the list and a report link for investigation.
The Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, noted the complaint and said the House would take action later.
Shortly after, Ugochinyere responded, saying Agbese was not present at the meeting where he was selected. He insisted Agbese had earlier supported the process and would provide evidence.
As both lawmakers argued, the session became chaotic, with members shouting across the chamber.
To calm tensions, the Speaker said the issue would be handled at a minority caucus meeting scheduled for later in the day and continued with other House business.
