The Chinese government has cautioned the United States against meddling in Nigeria’s internal affairs, following recent comments by former US President Donald Trump, who threatened possible military action over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed Beijing’s strong diplomatic support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner.”
“China firmly supports the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as it leads the Nigerian people on a development path suited to its national conditions,” Mao Ning said.
The Chinese spokesperson emphasized that Beijing “firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in another country’s domestic affairs or to threaten it with sanctions or force.”
Mao’s remarks were in response to Trump’s warning that the US could consider military intervention if reports of religious persecution in Nigeria continue.
Beijing’s position underscores China’s growing diplomatic backing for Nigeria, particularly as Western powers, including the United States, continue to pressure Abuja over human rights concerns and internal security challenges.
The statement also highlights the strengthening China-Nigeria relations, as both nations continue to deepen cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and governance.
