The House of Representatives has approved the 2026 budget of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) amounting to ₦171.2 billion. The approval came following deliberations in the Committee of Supply, where lawmakers considered the breakdown of the proposed expenditure and revenue allocations.
The budget includes ₦124.44 billion for recurrent expenditure, ₦26.78 billion for capital projects, and ₦32.01 billion earmarked for special projects. It also provides ₦20 billion for the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), while ₦276.23 billion is projected as transfer to the Federal Government for the financial year ending 31st December 2026.
The motion for approval was moved by the presiding Deputy Speaker, who urged the House to adopt the proposal as presented. The motion was seconded by Hon. Dr. Midala Usman Balami, who represented the position of the committee and supported the adoption of the report.
Following a voice vote, the Deputy Speaker announced that the “Ayes have it,” and the budget was duly approved.
The House subsequently resolved into the Committee of Supply, where the report of the Committee on Communications was further considered and adopted. The Committee noted that the recommendations, ranging from one to twenty-five, were approved as amended.
During the proceedings, a member raised concerns under matters of privilege regarding the quality of telecommunications services in the country. He cited issues such as dropped calls, poor connectivity, and charges for undelivered services, calling for stronger regulatory action.
However, the Speaker ruled that the matter should be formally presented as a motion of urgent public importance to allow full debate by members.
The House thereafter proceeded to the next item on the Order Paper as the Leader noted that the legislative day was far spent.
