The Lagos State Police Command has debunked a viral video circulating on social media which shows the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found with arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, clarifying that the footage is outdated and not linked to any recent incident.
The command explained that the clip being shared online is from an event that occurred over three years ago, stressing that its recirculation as a current development is misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the video does not reflect the present security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State.
According to the police, presenting the old footage as a fresh incident is capable of creating fear, confusion and public apprehension.
“The video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation,” the statement read.
The command urged residents to disregard the video and avoid sharing unverified content capable of undermining public peace and confidence.
It also warned social media users and content creators against the spread of misinformation, noting that individuals found deliberately circulating fake or misleading reports would face prosecution under existing laws.
“Individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the continued deployment of personnel and operational assets across strategic locations, black spots, and entry and exit points in the state.
The command said the security reinforcement is being carried out in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the safety of residents and visitors across Lagos.
It assured the public that adequate security measures remain in place to protect lives and property, urging residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.
Residents were also encouraged to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies on suspicious movements or activities within their communities, noting that public cooperation remains vital to effective policing and crime prevention.
